I am curious about any ideas you have observed or collected from schools around the world about an alternate form of summative assessment that works at scale? Loved the cobra analogy at the start. Great writing tool to share the impact of this topic in general.
Summative assessment at scale, especially if it is high stakes, is a tough one. So far I have only come away with one principle - standardised testing works well as a “floor“ screener - looking for essential but fairly basic competencies. Assessing anything beyond that probably works better as a project-based format, which makes scale so hard. I’m building on this idea in our schools and will see where it leads :)
